Sustainability And Geek Culture – An Introduction

It’s rare that we get to take time out from producing our regular content here at Infinite Frontiers and take a step back from celebrating all things geek related. But over the coming months we’re going to be doing just that, pausing for breath and taking a good look at the world around us. More specifically, we’re taking a look at the impact that geek culture has on our planet and how sustainable it really is.

COP26, that took place in Glasgow this month, has been an eye-opener for many around the world and only served to highlight the work that needs to be done in terms of sustainability to save this planet. But as collectors we all have a part to play. Not only in helping to put things right to fix the damage that has already been done, but taking responsibility in the choices we make every day as consumers.

We can’t deny any more that we have had a part to play in the damage caused to the environment with our collecting habits. And while industry is doing significant damage to the planet every single day, alongside those who continue to consume fossil fuels at an alarming rate, we still need to do our part instead of shifting the blame or responsibilities onto others. Whether we want to admit it or not, our hobby is a materialistic one, and that comes at a price.

In this ongoing series – running across all of our websites, fanzines and on our YouTube channel – we’ll be talking to collectors, manufacturers, publishers, traders and more and looking at all aspects of geek culture in depth. We’ll take a look at what are the key issues regarding sustainability, where things can be improved and showcasing some of the best examples currently being done to make a real difference. So come and join us on this exciting journey as we explore Sustainability And Geek Culture together…
