Switch stock issues driving prices sky-high, shortages to continue

Playing Vasara Collection in handheld mode on my Nintendo Switch!

If you’ve been trying to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch, you might have noticed that they are about as easy to find as toilet paper these days. That is to say, not easy at all, and not cheap, either.

Unsurprisingly, the current pandemic and subsequent shutdown of factories all over the world (and in China in particular) has had a catastrophic effect on the supply chain of most electronics. The Nintendo Switch is no different: as early as February, Nintendo issued a formal apology for the then-current-and-upcoming stock shortages.

We didn’t mention the Switch Lite because there was still enough stock in the market at the time of publication [in February]. But the point that many of its parts are made in China is the same. We are doing various efforts inside the company; although shipments haven’t stagnated, they are getting delayed.

Nothing seems to have changed, quite the contrary. I’ve seen Animal Crossing edition Switch consoles going for near US$1000 on FleaBay, and things are likely only going to get worse before they get better.
